Spring Comes to Covid Exhausted NYC, 2021
The first winter of the pandemic felt barren in New York City. Never before was I so desperate for signs of spring. Late on the afternoon of March 28, I walked along the Hudson River just before joining a Zoom Passover seder, the second Passover of the pandemic. Passover is the holiday when one celebrates liberation and spring. The bike path along the Hudson, however, was bereft of people. The trees were bare, the river shrouded by fog. The painted images on the blacktop seemed as inscrutable as those on Paleolithic cave walls. During the days and weeks that followed, I used my iPhone 10 to photograph signs of spring and freedom.
