Kaitlin Rose
Students are quick to take notice of artists who speak comfortably in a personal voice. They realize they are in the presence of someone who is authentic and wants to share their story. Singer/songwriter and musician Kaitlin Rose embodies these qualities. She’s also from Michigan, like the majority of students at Western Michigan University. One of Kaitlin’s songs that resonates deeply with many students is called “Bad Mother.” In the chorus, Kaitlin plaintively asks, “Am I a bad mother to be the one to leave?
A bad woman for wanting to be free?” Often an artist like Kaitlin is willing to perform a song, then perform it a second time while the lyrics are projected. This facilitates better conversations, ones that encourage students to tell their stories to the guest and one another.
