Julia Haw
Julia Haw has been a guest artist in my classes in at least six different semesters. Julia was born in Flint, Michigan and is a Western Michigan University alum. She earned her BFA in Painting in the School of Art in 2006. Julia is an oil painter who in her words, is “committed to addressing issues surrounding feminism, ageism, marginalized communities, intimacy, death, and overlooked societal “norms.” She is one hell of a painter. She is fearless in so many aspects of her professional life. She is equally prepared to share facets of both her professional and personal lives with students. Since 2015, Julia has been making lengthy trips to Cambodia, volunteering with Colors of Cambodia, an NGO that provides no-cost art education for Cambodian children. Esthetic Lens Magazine published an interview with Julia Haw on July 5, 2020, called, Creative Quarantine: Artist Julia Haw. The interview HERE, gives the reader a good idea of Julia’s recent life, including her getting trapped in India as the Covid-19 pandemic closed in there. Julia has a significant social media presence and is an influencer in many areas beyond fine art.
Her most recent visit to Direct Encounter with the Arts was in March 2021. In-person, via a synchronous video link, or in a recorded class session, Julia’s passion for art and for life itself is always palpable.
